Six Exhibits now on Display at the Gardner Museum!

The Gardner Museum of Architecture and Design currently has six exhibits on display! The three new exhibits are "Structures of the Mississippi River at Quincy, Illinois," "The Architectural Styles of Quincy," and "Gone But Not Forgotten." Continuing exhibits are "Martin J. Geise - Architect," "Aspirations in Glass" and "Builders and Manufacturers of Quincy." Hours are Thursday through Saturday 1-4 p.m.

“The Architectural Styles of Quincy” will feature building artifacts and photographs defining the various styles of architecture that can be found in Quincy.  This exhibit will include narratives to educate viewers about the style, with its history and characteristics.  It will also include the history of the structure featured. 

“Gone But Not Forgotten” will feature the homes and buildings of Quincy and the surrounding area that are no longer standing.  The exhibit will include artifacts from the buildings, photographs, blue prints, newspaper articles and narratives that include the history of these buildings and homes.  Viewers will learn about the former landscape of Quincy before these structures disappeared.

“Structures of the Mississippi River at and around Quincy, Illinois” is the Gardner Museum’s part of the Adams County Association of Museums collaborative exhibits about the Mississippi River that is being shown during 2010.  The Gardner Museum’s exhibit will feature information on the bridges, locks and dams and levee system around Quincy, Illinois.  Photographs showing the building of these structures and their history will be featured along with drawings, models and blueprints.  Narratives will explain the engineering, and history of these structures. 

“Martin J. Geise - Architect ” is an exhibit of local architect Martin J. Geise’s works.  Along with the photos, the exhibit also includes some of his blueprints and artifacts. Geise designed many buildings and homes in Quincy and the surrounding area from the early 1900 ’s until the late 30’s. This exhibit runs until August 2, 2010.

“Aspirations in Glass” features the museum’s beautiful stained glass collection in the second floor gallery.  This breath taking exhibit shows the stained glass windows from a variety of churches in the area that have been demolished.  There are also pews and artifacts from area churches included in the display. This exhibit is primarily permanent, but some peices are changed from year to year.

Builders and Manufacturers of Quincy is an exhibit that features the builders and manufacturers of building materials in the Quincy area. This exhibit will change annually. The 2009-2010 exhibit features Rees Construction and Michelmann Steel Construction and the brick manufacturers of Quincy. This exhibit is on display in the second story of the building. This exhibit runs until August 29, 2010.
