Six Exhibits will be on Display at the Gardner Museum!
The Gardner Museum of Architecture and Design will have six exhibits on display when the museum reopens on Saturday, March 26 from 1-4! The two new exhibits are "Mine Eyes Have Seen the Glory" commemorating the 150th anniversary of the Civil War and showing buildings and their history from the tri-state area that are still standing. "Gone But Not Forgotten" will also commemorate the Civil War featuring buildings of significance from the tri-state area that are no longer standing. "Harvey Chatten - Architect," and "Builders of Quincy," "Architectural Styles of Quincy" and "Aspirations in Glass" are continuing exhibits. Hours are Thursday through Saturday 1-4 p.m.
"Mine Eyes Have Seen the Glory" will feature Civil War era buildings from throughout the tristate area that are still standing. It will also tell the history of the tristate area and the roles communities played in the Civil War along with battles and other little known historcal facts.
“Gone But Not Forgotten” will feature significant homes and buildings of the Civil War Era from the tri-state area that are no longer standing. The exhibit will include artifacts from the buildings, photographs, blue prints, newspaper articles and narratives that include the history of these buildings and homes. Viewers will learn about the former landscape of the tri-state before these structures disappeared.
“Harvey Chatten - Architect ” is an exhibit of local architect Harvey Chatten’s works. Along with the photos, the exhibit also includes some of his blueprints and artifacts. Chatten designed many buildings and homes in Quincy and the surrounding area from the early 1900 ’s until the late 20 ’s.
Builders of Quincy is an exhibit that features the builders and manufacturers of building materials in the Quincy area. This exhibit will change annually. The 2010-2011 exhibit features Buerkin and Kaempen Builders and Henry Schenk - Altar Builder. This exhibit is on display in the second story of the building.
“The Architectural Styles of Quincy” will feature building artifacts and photographs defining the various styles of architecture that can be found in Quincy. This exhibit will include narratives to educate viewers about the style, with its history and characteristics. It will also include the history of the structure featured.
“Aspirations in Glass” features the museum’s beautiful stained glass collection in the second floor gallery. This breath taking exhibit shows the stained glass windows from a variety of churches in the area that have been demolished. There are also pews and artifacts from area churches included in the display. This exhibit is primarily permanent, but some peices are changed from year to year.
